29 countries with a total of 668 athletes and 225 judges, coaches and officials, which makes close to 900 persons altogether, came to Odense/DEN at the end of April. Nice selection for the European Championships in trampoline 2008 since, with the exception of the winners pair in men’s synchro, the French Jala / Laifa, all medallists of 2006 were present. The competitions of the three disciplines in junior and senior category were held over four days according to a new format elaborated by the UEG technical committee. The team finals in junior and senior were run on Thursday and Friday, while the individual finals were on the programme of Saturday.

Individual Trampoline

In the individual finals of the seniors, the world class athletes confirmed the predictions. The reigning Olympic champion, Yuriy Nikitin UKR, proved to keep on being the main option for a European triumph in the O.G in Beijing. The French Grégorie Pennes and the Russian Dmitry Ushakov finished only two tenths behind UKR. The tie break rules gave the silver medal to the young French athlete, undoubtedly the biggest surprise of the competition.

In the women’s competition, Irina Karavaeva allowed no surprises and clearly kept on being on the top of World and European trampoline. Silver went to the Ukrainian gymnast Olena Movchan; a nice confirmation of her triumph in the Olympic Test, held in Beijing last November. The gymnast of Belarus, Tatiana Petrenia, took the third place on the podium.

Trampoline synchrone

Belarus won the men’s synchronized event, with a brilliant performance from Model and Kazak. The French Martiny and Pennes finished one point behind the winners, while Nikiin and Chernonos (UKR) completed the podium. Ukraine was luckier in the women’s synchronized trampoline finals, as Domchevska and Movchan won the gold medal, two tenths ahead of Chernova and Karavaeva.

Tumbling

In Tumbling, the World Champion Andrey Krilov (RUS) won his first European title after two top level passes. Jozef Wadecki (POL) finished second, due to excellent style scores. With Andrei Kabishev (BLR) in the third position, the three leaders of the continental circuit in tumbling confirmed their dominance. In women’s category it was quite a surprise when World Champion Anna Korobeynikova (RUS) was beaten by Olena Chabanenko (UKR). Laura Houson (GBR) achieved the silver medal.

DMT

In women's DMT, Nicole Pacheco (POR) beat the two Russians, Galina Goncharenko (competing as well in individual trampoline) and Viktoria Voronina, relying on a higher execution. The difficulty tariffs were balanced between this powerful trio. In the absence of World Champion and new World Record holder, Kirill Ivanov (RUS), Dmitry Fedorovskiy made sure that the title does not get out of the Russian’s control. The Spanish Alejandro Ruiz (ESP) finished second, only four tenths behind the leader, and Timo Rass brought a bronze medal to the German team.

Public and Medias

The competitions took place in the FYN Arena, a new hall that provided the necessary infrastructures for the athletes. The media interest was small, with only about ten journalists and photographers of different European countries who followed the competitions. During the first three days, the stands were mainly occupied by the delegations who filled the hall with a warm atmosphere. For the finals on Saturday, the hall was full (more than 2000 spectators). A roundup of one hour of the finals was broadcasted by the Danish TV.
