Since officially taking office on January 23rd 2010, the new president of the European Union of Gymnastics, Georges Guelzec, has multiplied his meetings, visits, negotiations and contacts.
Company pool: Georges Guelzec has contacted the representatives of many companies in view of the creation of a partnership programme to reduce the costs of the organisers of UEG events. A further aspect of this project is to facilitate the reinsertion of gymnasts at the end of their career. Several companies (Swiss-Timing, Gymnova, Cirque du Soleil) have already joined this new programme.
Official UEG partners: the President has met in Lausanne with the representatives of Janssen&Fritsen and Spieth, apparatus suppliers and official UEG partners. The solidarity programme valid until 2013, allowing providing gymnastic material to certain federations, has been discussed.
Medical commission: a further meeting was held in Lausanne, the first meeting of the new UEG medical commission. The discussion allowed setting up the programme of interventions of the different official UEG doctors during the different UEG championships and events in 2010. The presidency of this commission will be assumed by the Swiss doctor Gérald Gremion.
Organisers ECh 2010: the President travelled to Bremen, Sofia/Varna and Birmingham in order to assist at meetings of the respective organising committees of the European Championships to be held this spring. He could observe the satisfying progress of the preparations. The general organisation, the result service provided by Swiss Timing and the different TV aspects belonged to the main discussion points. In Sofia he was received by the Sports Minister.
FIG executive committee: end of February, the President Guelzec stayed in Lausanne where he attended a meeting of the FIG executive committee, of which he is member since his election as president of the European continental Union. With satisfaction he took note of the generous subsidy which the UEG will receive by the FIG for its technical projects 2010.
CDES: March 8th, Georges Guelzec had a meeting with the CDES (centre for law and economics of sport). The CDES is an evaluation and training tool employed for the sports movement and its environment and has been commissioned by the European parliament to study how Europe can help the mass sport. GG took the opportunity to present UEG events such as the Golden Age or Eurogym.
PB/UEG: March 12th and 13th, a meeting of the UEG president’s board was held in Lausanne. The revised budget has been adopted. The proceedings of the preparations in view of the four European Championships of this spring were discussed. The organisation of the Secretariat and different points regarding the communication have been treated.
ECh WAG 2012 in Brussels: end of March, it is Brussels and the Royal Belgian Gymnastics Federation who received Georges Guelzec in view of the organisation of the women’s artistic gymnastics championships 2012 which will take place in the exposition park in Brussels. This visit has also enabled an exchange with the directors of the BEL NF regarding the UEG projects. After that, a press conference was held at the town hall, where the Belgian teams for the forthcoming ECh 2010 in Birmingham were presented. The discussions with the representatives of the City Council as well as the broad organisational experience of the Belgian federation, promise already success for the important ECh 2012, which will take place a few weeks before the Olympic Games in London.
