7th Eurogym 2010 in Odense – first assessment of the technical committee
Detlef Mann, president of the UEG technical committee Gymnastics for All draws up a first assessment of the 7th Eurogym 2010 that was held in Odense/DEN. An event that has a great potential for the future.
The technical committee expresses its satisfaction with the "mob dance"

The TC GfA is very proud to watch the success of this event and is very much convinced that this event has a great potential for the future. More than 50% of the group leaders have returned their evaluation form, which was handed out to them at the end of the week; the evaluation of these forms is on the way. “Nearly all participants and accompanying persons have been satisfied and very happy”.
Detlef Mann underlines as well the important presence of the UEG authorities at this manifestation: the UEG President, Georges Guelzec, as well as two vice presidents, Malin Eggertz Forsmark and Ruedi Hediger, in charge of the sport affairs, were on site as attentive observers: “the technical committee and the organising committee have very much appreciated this exceptional attention that was given to this Gymnastics for All event”.
The president of the TC-GfA has judged the cooperation with the LOC as excellent. The regulations have been developed allowing enough room for the proper creativity of the LOCs. Thus, in Odense, public performances have been organised in several “coast cities” – which was very much appreciated. However, he believes that the national federations should accord more support and attention to this youth event.
One of the greatest values of this event was the 550 volunteers – many of them elderly people. These later have been acting as “grand parents” of the youth and visa versa: “both parts created a very good relationship and many groups thanked “their” volunteers with special little shows or a small party at the schools where they were staying” stresses D. Mann.
The workshops – the heart of EUROGYM – have been run in an excellent way by teachers and students of the famous Gymnastics School “Ollerup”; another great value of this event. “The transmission of the content learned in the workshops in form of performances to the closing ceremony has been a real success” states Detlef Mann.
Accommodation in schools, breakfast and food (lunch and dinner) was according to the needs of the participants; this part was actually on of the best things of this 7th edition.
The president concluded by adding that « the UEG GALA was simply magnificent”. In addition, more and more NF give more efforts and attention to this UEG event.
Some impressions of the technical committee members:
Alberto Claudino Loureiro Nunes : “the relationship with the local organising committee LOC was really good. The volunteers were wonderful. The food was excellent and well-organised. Only the transports could have been more efficient. An event such as Eurogym gives the opportunity to shape personalities, which has a great impact on the education of the youth, both as citizens and as gymnasts”.
Roger Pittman: “I think that this event is under-funded – more resources should be invested. There were also some lacks in the direction of the event. However, with regard to the meals, these were probably the best ever served at a Eurogym. All expectations were not met, especially at the first Gala – but we finally managed the situation well”.
Heidi Marie Taksdal: « What struck me most was the joy and the happiness expressed by all participants. I have heard no complaints concerning the food or the accommodation in schools, etc. The workshops and their instructors have been very appreciated".
Hlif Thorgeirsdottir: «this week has made thousands of young people very happy – everything went well. However, the concept of the opening ceremony will have to be reconsidered, as it was very long in Odense. I have really appreciated the “mob dance” that has created a bridge between the gymnasts and the public, as did the Facebook site and the numerous blogs that were opened for the Eurogym. I have plenty of ideas for the next edition”.
Maria Stahl: “I had some great days in Odense with a lot of new experiences and new acquaintances from different parts of Europe.
Both the various Workshops and Forums offered a high-quality content. During the Workshops and Forums that I visited there was a good activity and a great enthusiasm. The instructors were good at adapting the content to the participant’s different levels, which is a necessary for successful workouts.
According to me, Eurogym 2010 can be summarized by the words: Gymnastics in a large range, joy, community and exchange”.

7th Eurogym 2010 in Odense - Forum in a new way
At this 7th Eurogym the Forum was organized in a new way. Three different educational and technical topics were offered to participants, mainly to assistant coaches, coaches and head of delegations.
The participants of the Forum could register for 3 different topics:In Video-Feedback Kenneth Pingel talked about Video feedback in general - video delay- the coach’s tasks and what is required of the coach.
He gave important (valuable) information about technical equipment and pointed out that a great website for coaches to look at is www.springsikker.dk, which includes also topics of the second Forum "spotting in tumbling" given by Helge Fisker and assisting Ollerup students.
It focused on different aspects of spotting, biomechanics and methodologicalsetup. All 50 participants, coaches and gymnasts were very active and happy to get new ideas and inspirations.
The third Forum of 2 hours duration was implementation of acrobatics in choreography given by Katarine Ingvardsen and Erik Vedel. They gave excellent examples of how to implement partnering in the warming up, in strengthening exercises and in relays. They taught about body awareness, social aspects natural joy of doing gymnastics. They gave their example of choreography and participants were guided to make their on process into a piece of choreography with a partner.

Epilogue of the 7th EUROGYM 2010: goodbye Odense – see you soon Coimbra
The football stadium of Odense vibrated during 90 minutes on the great rhythm of the magnificent closing ceremony of the 7th Eurogym. The programme was completely animated by the 2000 gymnasts that have presented the results of this week’s work.
2000 gymnasts on the field of the stadium, 2200 in the tribunes and some 600 local spectators that bought a ticket, have attended a magnificent closing ceremony, perfectly orchestrated, closing the 7th Eurogym, youth festival of the UEG.On the theme of the four elements water – fire – earth and air, the gymnasts showed, with great joy and pride, the results of what they had learned during the workshops of the first four days:
WATER : workshops of choreography - Laban, dance-aerobic, movement on the floor, artistic gymnastics and mountain biking, hoops and large exercise balls, tumbling and choreography.
FIRE : workshops of House, vaulting, tango-robic, vaulting table, Hiphop, circus and clubs
EARTH : workshops of short and long ropes, rope-skipping and modern dance, Danish rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline, air-track and parkour.
All workshops as well as the closing ceremony have been prepared and guided by instructors and students of the sport school Ollerup.
After the show, Jytte Storm, President of the OC, took the floor for a brief official part in order to say goodbye to her 4200 guests from a week that has passed very fast. The Vice President of the UEG, Ruedi Hediger, thanked the Danish federation, the organising committee with its staff and its 600 volunteers as well as the technical committee of the UEG for the success of this event. He then declared the 7th Eurogym 2010 closed, before handing over the UEG flag to the representative of the Portuguese Federation, Manuel Boa de Jesus, and the city of Coimbra, Luis Providencia, who will organise the 8th Eurogym 2012 from July 14th to 20th.
Thank you Odense and good luck Coimbra !

7th EUROGYM 2010: a wonderful Gala
The Fyn Arena in Odense was sold out for the two Gala shows of the Eurogym 2010. All groups, without exception, have presented a performance of a very high level – thank you to you gymnasts, coaches and choreographers!
About 8'000 persons admired the gymnastic show presented in two representations by the groups of 17 countries. The federations that had more than three groups inscribed at the EUROGYM could inscribe themselves for the Gala. The technical committee Gymnastics for All of the UEG reserved the right to attribute 3 wild cards to other groups that met the criteria of a Gala.During more than 60 minutes (that passed too fast) one production followed the other one, raising “ahs” and “ohs”, applause and even standing ovations in the ranks of the spectators. To be able to perform in a sold out stadium is already a great success itself, which theses “Eurogymnasts” have well deserved.
The first group to pass was the one of Greece. 5 clubs with 96 gymnasts gathered for a theatrical choreography on the fairytale of Andersen “the Princess and the Pea”. A very nice staging.
“When it rains, you can snuggle on the coach, but why not dance a little?” That’s what the group from Finland proposed, under the shelter of small yellow umbrellas.
Germany had chosen as a theme the dual between the good and evil spirits in the forest. 37 actors aged between 7 and 26 years acted as the four elements – ballerinas, witches, acrobats and dancers.
Italy had delegated the students from the Physical and Sports Education University of Turin for a modern and very elaborated gymnastic performance.
Always on time and precisely, the Team-Gym girls from Iceland who know how to use their time wisely and who show it to the spectators: tic-tac, tic-tac.
220 gymnasts from the different clubs from Belgium participating at the Eurogym 2010 came together and present their new choreography accompanied by the rhythm of Batuka, a kind of aerobic on Latin music (salsa, reggaeton, rumba flamenco, samba) – of course very catching!
60 girls and boys from all over Sweden, aged between 15 and 23 years and with different background, from gymnastics for all, RG, Team-Gym and much more, share the same passion for gymnastic and present a very energetic exercise.
The gymnasts from Estonia participate in their 4th Eurogym since 2003. They are of different ages, backgrounds and levels but share as well the same passion for gymnastics and acrobatics.
The Slovaks come from the club « Rapid Bratislava », the best gymnastic squad from 2006-2009 that consists of approximately 100 members with 10 qualified coaches. Besides RG, the club is engaged in various international exhibitions, dance performances and competitions.
Switzerland was represented by the club of Räterschen. It was the first club that introduced the Air-Track in Switzerland. Today, 44 clubs use this very fun discipline that is adapted to all levels and is very close to tumbling. The exercise of this group consists of air-track, mini-trampoline and floor gymnastics. Their aim: participate at the next TeamGym European Championships of the UEG.
The club from Trévoux, from the suburbs of Lyon (region of Rhône-Alpes) was tonight the ambassador of France, celebrating today the 14th of July! A fantastic performance with a great mix between RG and ACRO that received an ovation from the spectators.
The group from Portugal with 35 girls and 11 boys, aged between 12 and 18 years, participates for the 3rd time at the Eurogym. Their exercise consists of aerobic, acrobatic and tumbling elements that are perfectly synchronised with a very rhythmical and coordinated choreography.
The 50 girls from Fredrikstad in Norway train 4 evenings per week by practicing acrobatic gymnastics by pairs or groups with very rhythmical elements or traditional gymnastics. Over time, they have developed their own style, that is now adopted by other groups all over Europe. A spectacular show at a stunning rhythm!
Denmark, host country, was represented by a group of 18 gymnasts, all girls, who formed a group for the Eurogym 2010, even though they come from different clubs. They have prepared during the last two month and have been looking forward to present what they can do.
Last group to pass, is the one from the British national team of gymnastics for disabled persons (eg. Down syndrome). Founded in 1987 on the occasion of the Gymnaestrada in Herning, the National Disabilities Display Team performs regularly with great happiness across Europe and the World. Their excellent demonstration is rewarded with a warm standing ovation.
At the end of this wonderful evening all actors and organizers of this exceptional EUROGYM Gala came together – an excellent occasion to party and dance the Mob Flash Dance....

7th EUROGYM 2010 in Assens and Nyborg
Every day different groups were invited to perform outside of Odense in small coast towns - the small excursions were a great plus.
Different impressions of Assens and Nyborg. The other coast towns are Nordfyns and Middelfart. In Nyborg the gymnasts were welcomed with cannon shots and a parade was organised to bring them to the performance place.
Cost cities – a new element in the 7th EUROGYM 2010
The Local Organisation Committee had the brilliant idea to integrate cities from around the coast line of the Island Fyn into the event.
The objective of this new idea is to bring the 7th EUROGYM 2010 to the entire Island of Fyn that the citizens become aware what is happening at the moment in Odense. The following cities invited groups from all over Europe to show their way doing Gymnastics for All and a little bit of their own culture:
Assens, Bogense, Middelfart, Faaborg-Midtfyn and Nyborg.
The event in Nyborg on Tuesday, 13th of July:
Nyborg combines past and present in the finest possible way. The town of Nyborg is a historic royal borough with many historic and cultural sights, among others Nyborg Castle.
Groups from 9 National Gymnastics Federations have been travelling to Nyborg to show their performances to the local citizens. The groups were welcomed with a very special ceremony. In the near of the castle 4 big canons have been loaded with (Pulver) and fired creating a very loud noise. Men wearing uniforms from earlier times were doing this in an old fashioned way.
After this welcome ceremony the groups marched to the performance area at the castle behind a band playing marching music. The host city welcomed everybody to this beautiful and historic place, a special welcome to the UEG president George Guelcec, UEG vice-president Ruedi Hediger and the president of the UEG Technical Committee Gymnastics for All, Detlef Mann.
The a.m. groups did enjoy presenting their performances to the public of Nyborg. It can be assumed that the young gymnasts who have been there will never forget this wonderful experience in Nyborg.
7th EUROGYM 2010: « Eurogymnasts » on stage
We continue with our tour of the public performances which were today, Wednesday, accompanied by a radiant sun and 28 °C! Stands selling ice creams and refreshing drinks as well as some cosy places in the shade have also added to this feeling of summer holidays.
Certain groups that had chosen more voluminous costumes than the traditional leotards must have suffered with this heat this afternoon. But never mind, as productions are never longer than 3 to 8 minutes and then the gymnasts could quickly jump into their tops and shorts while the boys could walk around shirtless. But be careful not to get sunburnt!Apparently, the young ones are very happy about their stay in Denmark and the general atmosphere of the Eurogym. Not too many complaints for the food (except that the dinner is served very early in Denmark), but one word can be heard very often: the BUSSES: those that are awaited and that don’t show up, those that are taken and that don’t go in the expected direction, the yellow line that stops working at 17h00, those that don’t bring you from a workshops to a performance in the city centre on time... One thing must be specified: Odense is a very extensive city and some sites are quite far apart from each other. In the morning the busses drive circles, but in the afternoon they only come every 30 minutes. This situation requests a lot of organizational and common sense from the group leaders, in order to find the best way, the best schedules and the right colour of the bus line.
A bit less trouble for the groups that present their performance in the coast cities – those are brought and picked up at the right place.
The tension rises a bit, as in the evening the selected groups will perform during the two Eurogym Galas – a show of some 90 minutes.

7th Eurogym 2010: plenty of attractive workshops
The 4200 gymnasts are the principal actors of the Eurogym. The technical committee Gymnastics for All offer them some 170 workshops in order to show them other facets of gymnastics and sports.
Accompanied by their group leaders, the groups move from one place to another to participate in the workshops for which they registered. Sometimes it allows the gymnasts to better themselves for example with choreography. Or on the contrary, to discover new activities. The big majority of the courses are held in English, which is a good exercise to improve the English mark at school!A great programme :
The workshop programme really offers a very wide choice. Everybody should find a discipline to try out. Under the guidance of qualified instructors, the participant can try different activities such as big splash at the swimming pool, bowling, mini golf, choreography, archery, mountain biking, group exercises and games, artistic gymnastics, some exercises of the circus, mini trampoline, acrobatics, trampoline and tumbling, vaults, dance-aerobic, funk, Tai Chi, Tango, exercises with clubs, hoop or rope, hip hop, house, jazz and so on...
What distinguishes a Eurogym from a Gymnaestrada is that the young ones are busy all day long; they link the useful (learning and discovery) with the pleasure (fun, animation, exchanges). And the participants proudly present their performances in front of their mates of other clubs, who came from other countries, or the more local spectators.
4’200 ambassadors
The Eurogym is more than just an active week of holiday or a festival. It has also got an educational and social side that is very important nowadays.
"This is exactly what sport is like when it’s at its best, it can make people across nations come together and create inspiration and joy. The objective of the work with social media is to create 4,200 ambassadors for Denmark and gymnastics and I am confident that we have already achieved these goals – just watch the Facebook-site. Even moms and friends of the participants are sharing their thoughts and their love for the sport", says Jytte Storm, President of the Organizing Comittee from the Danish Gymnastics Federation says.

7th EUROGYM 2010: Odense – the place to be!
4200 gymnasts from 23 countries divided into 180 groups have filled the streets of Odense with a cheerful atmosphere for the opening parade of the 7th EUROGYM 2010. For the first time, Eurogym has its page on Facebook!
Approximately 4200 participants aged between 8 and 18 years came from all over Europe to enjoy a week of sports, discovery, fun, exchanges and adventure. Not a simple logistic matter for the organisers who have to provide accomodation, food and transport for these 4200 participants and their companions – this is a new participation record! After the nice parade through the streets of Odense, forming a star, and the entry with fanfare into the stadium, the groups took their seats on the tribunes, which took quite some time as one can imagine! Following a brief official part with welcome speeches presented by Detlef Mann, President of the UEG Technical Committee Gymnastics for All, Jytte Storm, President of the Organising Committee, Preben Staun, Vice President of the National Danish Olympic Committee and the Deputy Mayor of Odense, Stina Willumsen, the UEG flag was hoisted and the Danish national anthem was sang by the entire crowd. The Eurogym 2010 has started!
One hour before the opening ceremony the dark sky and some rain drops made everyone fear a wet evening, but nothing happened and the sun came even back again! During about one hour a historical part was presented that was dedicated to Hans Christian Andersen, author of well known fairy tales who was born in Odense. After that, the spectators and gymnasts enjoyed different gymnastic performances.
Monday’s programme:
08.45 - 12.00 workshops
14.00 - 17.00 performances in different places of the city of Odense
20.00 - 22.00 garden party at the Zoo

7th EUROGYM 2010: the coolest gym summer!
8 hours of gymnastics in all varieties - indoor, outdoor, and most of all in the city of Odense, for the great pleasure of the Danish public. Everyone gives its best and enjoys the sun shine.
During the day the young participants discover different sports and other fun activities in 150 workshops. In the afternoon the groups present performances on different stages in the city.Since it is impossible to be everywhere at the same time, especially because of the long distances between the different places, the two UEG reporters have chosen the places Kongenshave, centre of the festival, and Brandts, in the old town centre. The performances are very varied. Some tell a story, others are pure gymnastics and acrobatics. The music sometimes reminds of the country, such as the Fado of a group of Portugal or ABBA of the Swedish. One realises quite easily that the clubs have prepared themselves very carefully, because the level is remarkable. Some schools are also present and they focussed on research, creativity and originality.
In the evening, the heads of delegation and the UEG responsible have, unfortunately during a big thunderstorm, joined all participants invited to a garden party at the zoo of Odense, after an idyllic boat trip on the river.
Don’t forget to visit the official page on Facebook where you can find a lot of personal messages.

7th EUROGYM 2010: different impressions
The Eurogym cannot really be described in words – the Eurogym must be lived on site and communicated through photos and videos. Here some impressions of the productions of the place “Brandts”.
Small tour of Europe with groups that came from Germany, Portugal, Greece, Norway, France, Estonia, Switzerland, Belgium, Finland, Sweden and Iceland. The travel record is made again, as in Albi two years ago, by the group with 25 gymnasts coming from the French Guiana; they are also already announced for the Gymnaestrada 2011 in Lausanne.
The names of the groups are sometimes quite poetic such as Castel Madama, Piruett, Harlequin, the wind of Anatolia.
The performances contain a lot of elements of acrobatic gymnastics but also dance and mini-trampoline or some exercises with apparatus such as sticks, rings, balls and all other kinds of apparatus used in the gymnastic clubs.
Don’t forget to visit the official page on Facebook where you can find a lot of personal messages.

The City of Odense
With more than 185'000 inhabitants, Odense is Denmark’s third largest city, situated south-east on the island of Funen. Hans-Christian Andersen, author of the famous tales of the same name, was born there in 1805 and one can visit a museum dedicated to him. Business, culture and sports city, Odense is also a very lively university city, where the UEG has already organised the 2008 European Trampoline Championships.
General information:
7th EUROGYM 2010 in Odense/DEN
13 National Federations (NF) followed the invitation of the Organisers of the 7th EUROGYM 2010 and participated from June 12th to 14th in the information meeting in Odense / DEN.

the Information meeting for the EUROGYM 20120 held in Odense
Photo: afd
In February already, an “expert meeting” was organised with representatives of 5 NF, the members of the UEG Technical Committee Gymnastics for All (TC-GfA/UEG) and the organisers.
Thirteen NF were represented at the information meeting in mid June. They had the possibility to discover already now the general programme of the event as proposed by the TC-GfA/UEG. In particular they could discover, guided by the organizers, the different venues in the city centre where the platforms for the public presentations will be installed. The opening and closing ceremonies will be held in the stadium, the EUROGYM Gala in the Fyn Arena, where the 2008 ECh Trampoline were already organised.
The Organising Committee of Odense (LOC) suggests a very interesting initiative. It plans public demonstrations in «coast cities», offering like this the possibility for an excursion integrated in this Festival. These «coast cities» are situated some 40-60 km from Odense, on the borders of the Island Fyn.
The provisional and definitive registrations of the participating groups will be fully electronic, via the Website of the OC. The NF can decide if they will enter the participants themselves or if they leave this task to the group leaders by giving them the password.
Everything seems to indicate that the 7th Youth Festival EUROGYM of the UEG, taking place in the town where 1805 the writer Hans Christian Andersen was born – author of the well-known tales we all have read when we were children – will be an unforgettable event for the young gymnasts from all over Europe.
The Website www.eurogym2010.com will be activated in the next couple of days; it will include all information given during the meeting held in June.

Expert meeting EUROGYM in Odense
The Technical Committee Gymnastics for All (TC-GfA) had invited experts from seven national federations to Odense. The aim was to discuss with the organising committee (OC) of the 7th EUROGYM 2010 the future development of the UEG youth festival.

Experts, organizers and TC-members at the end of the meeting.
Before opening the discussion, Detlef Mann, president of TC CfA / UEG thanked the federations who had responded to the request of the UEG by delegating representatives to this work meeting.
Taking into account the constant evolution of the number of participants, it is estimated that in medium term this event will attract more than 5’000 participants. Such a development raises a series of questions which must be discussed and that need to be answered.
It starts with the fact that the requirements for potential organizers regarding accommodation (schools), sports facilities (halls and outdoor locations for workshops) and transport during the event will grow significantly.
Another question is to what extent a important increase in the number of participants will influence the character of the EUROGYM, which is a vector of know-how to the national federations.
