Trampoline men's and women's team finals
24 April 2010. Last night’s developments in the competition in Trampoline, ladies and men's team finals, in DMT junior boys and girls finals.
The competitions had definitely taken into the right direction, the organization was very smooth and timing much more precise with an opportunity for breaks; the atmosphere was relaxed and cheerful. Inevitably there were surprises; they did nothing but enrich the palette of the event. Last night’s developments in
TRAMPOLINE
- Ladies team finals – the Russians swept the floor with their impressive performances and took the gold, which repeated their success from the previous Championships in 2008. The German team performed very well and got the silver. France with their third place and the bronze are back on the track. The Ukraine and Belarus, which are traditionally strong, were pushed backwards in the ranking due to failures in earlier routines, unfortunately.
- Men team finals – the crashes here of the Russian and French teams at the onset of competition opened the door to the other teams, which were enabled to aspire for a better ranking. The German team continued its triumph from the preliminaries and won the gold with an impressive quality of performance. Belarus was strong as usual and the 3 safe routines performed won the silver. The Danish team somewhat unexpectedly got the bronze, though there was a noticeable positive trend in their performances already.
TUMBLING
- Junior girls team finals – the developments were more than pleasant for the top ranked. Great Britain won the gold in a very strong and fair competition. That was the reward for the 60 hours’ trip by bus and a proof that youth is tough and daring. Ireland placed second got their first European medal ever in their history. Russia came third. The competition was very close indeedm leaving a difference of less than 4 points between the first and fifth.
- Junior boys team finals – that was a very close race between Russia and Great Britain. The Russian won the first place by a mere 0.1, though the gap between the top two and the Ukraine on the third place was quite wide.
DOUBLE MINI TRAMPOLINE
- DMT junior girls team finals – as expected the Russians had a landslide victory, Spain got the silver, while Great Britain came out third because of the mistake of one competitor. Since the number of competitors is three, the mistake cost a lot.
- DMT junior boys team finals – medals were allocated on the basis of preliminary results, since only two teams were competing. Mr. Mogensen, UEG TC President summed up the event as: “Overall impressive. The genuinely good ones in the three disciplines perform on a high level and continuously improve. It seems that the bottom and the lower middle level do not move, the development is very modest, the skills and routines get repeated over and over. Definitely there is a room for development. No doubt the Portuguese team is much missed in the whole picture. They are the largest groups beside the Russians and they ensure the balance in general. Sweden is missed too, especially in DMT, where they were establishing the balance and contributing to the improvement of the quality. Thus, DMT suffered much from the eruption of the volcano. All three disciplines are moving forward, but tumbling and DMT need a larger number of nations to take part.”
Mrs. Mariela Sirakova, MD, former FIG Medical Commission member, since 2009 member of TUEC (Therapeutic Use Exemption Commission) is in charge of the medical aspects.
Questions addressed to her were on doping control, medical care on the site and the incidence of injuries. “A licensed Bulgarian doping control body set up by Bulgarian medical doctors is in charge, while I am coordinating and overseeing their activities for compliance with WADA standards. Though, in my experience in the FIG I have never come across any positive results in this sport. Any such incidents are usually related to unfamiliarity with drug counter indications during a treatment. On site there is a fully equipped medical office, doctors, reanimobile and a very close by emergency center” She said. Mr. N. Kalashnikov, President of the Russian Federation commented that the only flaw in the competitions’ organization is the lack of visibility of the difficulty indicated, which could be seen only after the written records are received, and then it is too late for any corrections.

Second day
April 23, 2010, Varna. Second day. As Erik Mogensen, TC President said: “The competitions went well overall, we survived the first day and we are going on.”In the Synchronized TRA men offered a great surprise – athletes kept falling one after the other.
As usual it started with a brief meeting between the LOC and UEG TC to analyze all competition aspects of the day before. In general the organization was smooth, though some technical adjustments have to be made and no doubt this will take care of the almost perfect development in the two days left. He further commented that a lot of good performances were to be seen in the competitions, though still there are areas of improvement.”In the Synchronized TRA men offered a great surprise – athletes kept falling one after the other. – the Czech competitor started it, but then Belarus, Russia, Bulgaria, etc. went on failing their routines. It was unbelievable that the number of crashes was 18 out of 25. Despite this big number of failures, some of the routines going through were quite impressive.
On the contrary ladies performed well in general, accomplishing what they planned to do.
Juniors performed very well and the battle to qualify for the YOG was rather tough. All eight finalists are of a good level.
Country wise the success of Greece was impressive. Though talent is a must in the first place; to develop it requires a lot of work. In the junior girls Switzerland has made a significant progress. The third place of BARDY Solenn from France commands much respect.
Traditionally the former Eastern European countries dominated, despite the fact that for various reasons they are losing momentum.
One of the big surprises was the triumph of German men in DMT finals over Russia. It was rather unexpected, but isn’t that what competitions are all about?
In DMT the girls of Russia were clearly on top. It might be said that boys are good overall, though girls who are good in general still have room for improvement.
In tumbling the performances were good. It has to be noted that men performed many triple somersaults; even one of the athletes did a triple back!
Mr. Miguel Vicente TC member emphasized that at these competitions for almost the first time the new trampoline 4 X 4 is being used. It increases the height of flight, makes the amplitude bigger; thus performances are more spectacular and the results - higher.
Mr. Horst KUNZE, President of the Technical Committee of the FIG has arrived and his intervention is avidly anticipated.
The Bulgarian Minister of Sport Svilen Neykov will attend the ECh at 13.30 to meet with the UEG representatives, the LOC and to watch the competitions.
And last, but not least it should be specifically emphasized that for these Championships to happen, a big number of people made great efforts and sacrifices to be here and contribute regardless of the natural calamities. This factor as well had an adverse affect on the number of participating countries; it was expected to be bigger.
And certainly it has to be noted that the TC work is performed virtually by three people – Mr. Mogensen, Mr. Vicente and Mr. Okoniewski. The fourth member – Mariela Stoycheva from Bulgaria is wearing two hats: she is the LOC’s driving engine, taking care and overseeing every technical and competition aspect, while at the same time performing her TC member duties. At the same time the length of competition time has been decreased.

Russia already in leading position
After the first part of the preliminary competition (as qualifications for the finals) some results are already available and shows that Russia is still the leading nation.
from UEG-correspondent in Varna Olga SToyanova:Double mini trampoline (DMT):
The preliminary results in DMT men indicate a marked supremacy for Russia having taken all three top places (KOVALEV Sergey - 73.60, FEDOROVSKIY Dmitry - 73.60 and CHERNOIVANOV Evgeniy - 73.00). However, the German SCHMIDT Daniel is following quite close. The ranking is going down gradually to the 11th place where an abrupt difference in performance appears to end at the 14th (IVANOV KIRILL – RUS with his mere 22.50 points and 15th ranked competitor (SALIEV Aliosmann – BUL with 0.00 points) who had bad luck indeed.
The preliminaries in DMT women followed the same trend with all three top places taken by Russian athletes, respectively BALANDINA Svetlana (69.60), GONCHARENKO Galina (68.90) and VORONINA Victoria (67.80). They are quite closely followed by the German DEUNER Kathrin with her 66.80 points to go down to the 13th place with a mere 20.00 points.
Trampoline
In the individual trampoline preliminaries for girls the picture is more varied – the top three being Belarus, Russia and France, followed by GBR. Despite the significant number of entrants (59) difference in points is quite close approximately up to the 40th place, after which obviously the gap in performance opens more markedly.
Somehow, the trampoline team preliminaries for girls followed almost the same pattern: Belarus, Russia and France, followed by Switzerland (4th) and GBR (5th). The same ranking was repeated exactly in the trampoline preliminaries for junior girls qualified for finals.
Tumbling
In the individual tumbling preliminaries for men Russia convincingly dominated with its three top places (PODUST Timofey - 73.10, MURTAZAEV Tagir - 73.10 and KOSTYANOV Mikhail - 72.60). PODUST and MURTAZAEV have been differentiated by the second pass. It is worthwhile noting that after the 7th place the gap between competitors is growing.
In women tumbling preliminaries Russian athletes took the two leading positions (KOROBEYNIKOVA Anna - 66.50, followed not so closely by her teammate KRASNOKUTSKAYA Elena - 64.70), while the third place went to Belarus (CHABANENKO Olena - 63.00). After the 5th and 6th places held by Great Britain; an evident difference in the level of difficulty has to be noted, which affected the scores.
A perfect venue for this championships
The 22nd European Championships in Trampoline, Tumbling and DMT are carried in the Palace of Culture and Sports (the Sports Hall). It was built in 1968 on the site of the former cycling track to be extended in 1987 is one of the emblems of Varna and still among the largest structures of this kind in Bulgaria. It is the venue of a number of sports events, festivals, concerts, trade exhibitions, etc.
Matei Todorov (GBR), BAGA Technical Director, Acrobatic & Tumbling, Manager for Tumbling at the current event. On this event Matei Todorov said: “It will be remembered by some athletes with the medals they win, others will remember the tears shed, while there will be those who will never forget the difficult journey to Varna. However, we all will keep the memories of all the three. “
Asked who the athletes are, which have to be watched; he said “Watch out for the Russians in all events. France and Spain have also achieved good results in certain events. Great Britain will get what they can. There is a certain decline in GBR men’s tumbling, but it is not symptomatic for the state of the discipline – merely a change of generations. In general the development in tumbling is rather good and there is an ongoing increase in the number of new athletes. Former Eastern bloc countries are traditionally good, but in recent years due to the diminishing resources and the outflow of “expertise” the results are going down.”
“In terms of training and competition conditions and organization arrangements, everything is flawless.” He added.
The competitions are still going on at this hour.

Both brilliant athletes will also participate in the synchro category where they will compete with their partners for the title. The Ukrainian Olena Movchan, Vice European Champion in 2008 and used to the podium is also to be counted with, also in the synchro category. The two British gymnasts Claire Wright and Jamie Moore have put an end to their long and fruitful career. Great-Britain now counts on Katherine Driscoll, individual and synchro, where she will compete with the 2008 Junior European Champion Emma Smith.
With regard to the men, the Ukrainian Yuriy Nikitin, 2004 Olympic Champion, 5th in 2008 in Peking and 2004 and 2008 European Champion will defend his title. His opponents will be the 2nd ranked in 2008, the French Grégoire Pennes, his synchro partner Oleksandr Chernonos, Viachaslau Modzel and Mikalai Kazak from Belarus (also 2008 European Champion in synchro) as well as the Danish gymnast Peter Jensen (5th in 2008) and the ever present Henrik Stehlik GER. In synchro, the French Sébastien Martiny/Grégoire Pennes will try to step on the podium as they did in 2008 (2nd).
In TUM women, the titleholder Olena Chabanenko UKR will participate, as the present European Champion Andrey Krylov RUS.
In DMT, Nicole Pacheco POR, winner in 2008 is not entered, which will give a good chance to the two Russians Goncharenko and Voronina, 2nd and 3rd two years ago. The European Champion Dmitry Fedorovskyi will also be in Varna to defend his title.
